My personal studio practice has become more defined and capable of conveying information as well as a stronger understanding and development into more aesthetically pleasing pieces, but while the general visual appearance may create a certain “grunge” look, the thought process can be and has the tendency to be a lot more open and abstract with the exploration of aesthetics texture and the nature of symbiotic relationships.
My process is not planned but more along the lines of instinctive, I create pieces to explore how texture and shape can relate to one another and ultimately how a relationship can form between the graphic and the mark.
The usage of real world objects and materials helps me completely abstract the original intended form into something with needs and wants, so by firstly creating pieces on their own I can then discover “what else” is needed which in this case opens up the topic of symbiotics.
While my work is created with found materials which I source throughout my practice I don’t feel a sense of connection to the materials straight away, I manipulate them by changing the form, the addition or subtraction of other materials and importantly the exploration of colour harmony/contrast & texture.
After creating the initial piece I can then go onto understanding what the piece’s needs and wants are so I can start the construction to the following addition to the relationship. This can happen up to any number of times and can go through a multitude of different iterations and designs until I believe my artwork has succeeded with a symbiotic relationship.
